CONCLUSION

Christ’s descent, then, has a number of ecclesiological implications. First, by way of negation, it does not provide an alternative mode of union with Christ. Salvation, and thus inclusion in God’s new covenant people, is by grace through faith. The descent is not some sort of intermediate plan B means of salvation or inclusion in God’s people. Instead, it is effective precisely and only for those who already awaited the Messiah in their earthly lives prior to Christ’s first advent. A second ecclesiological implication of the descent is that it provides the rhythm for our ecclesial lives. To enter into God’s church, we descend into the waters of baptism and are thereby united to Christ’s own descent into death (Rom 6:4). And the church’s life, particularly its weekly (rhythmic) corporate gatherings, is restful precisely because Christ has worked and rested, in the descent, for us. Additionally, the descent is related to the means by which the communion of the saints throughout space and time occurs. In the descent, Christ transforms paradise, so that the righteous dead now enjoy communion with him and therefore also with us. This communion is especially prevalent in Communion, during which we are spiritually united to Christ’s body and blood and so also to one another, including those who are absent from the body but present with the Lord.
